The Diagonale des Fous is the argument that mountain ultras are not a European Alps monopoly and not a Colorado one either. The Grand Raid's flagship crosses Réunion from Saint-Pierre to Saint-Denis, at night at the start, through cirques and rain forest and volcanic high ground, on the order of 180 kilometers and 10,000-plus meters of climb, 66 hours on the clock. Demand is 5 because the technicality, the climate stack, and the distance arrive together. This is not 10,000 meters of well-graded TMB. It is steps, mud, humidity, and a course that has been eating competent mountain runners for decades.
Worth is 5 if you can get to the island. That is not a small if. Réunion is a French department in the Indian Ocean; the flight is the fee that does not show up on the registration page. Once you are there, you are in a landscape that does not have an American substitute: Pitons, cirques, and ramparts on the UNESCO list, a local race culture that treats the Diagonale as a civic event, and a finish in Saint-Denis that is not a Chamonix street party clone. Value is a 4 rather than a 5 only because the travel tax is real. The 2026 course skips Cilaos. We note that. We do not pretend the Diagonale is a fixed cartoon of every cirque. Skipping a town is not a reason to take the race off the icon shelf, and it is not something we will hide.
Prestige is a 4: inside the sport this is an icon; outside the sport it is a name people mispronounce. We prefer that ratio to a World Series final. Organization confidence is medium. The Grand Raid publishes, and the event is huge.
If you want a first European-style 100, this is the wrong first anything. If you want to spend a long-haul ticket on a race that could not be moved to Annecy or Leadville without disappearing, this is one of the two or three best answers we have.
Who it is for
Experienced mountain ultra runners who want a tropical, technical, culturally specific 180 km and will handle the long-haul logistics.
Who should skip
Heat-intolerant runners, first 100s, and anyone who wants Alps logistics with a familiar aid-station language.
