How we score
RaceWorth™ is an editorial scorecard for destination trail and mountain ultras. It is not UltraSignup. It is not a difficulty index. Promoters cannot buy a number.
Two headlines, always visible
Demand (1–5) is how much the race asks: distance and format, vertical, technicality, climate, altitude, and the logistics tax of actually getting there. A 5 is a week-altering, possibly career-altering ask. A 2 is a hard day that is still a day.
Worth (1–5) is whether the weekend is worth the flight and the fee, including lottery years and lodging. Scenery, field, organization, and value sit here. A famous name does not get a 5 because it is famous. A quiet mountain 100 can.
We do not average them into a 0–100. We do not clone Ultra Index challenge formulas. If you want a single ranking of “hardness,” you are on the wrong site.
Ten supporting dimensions
Each is 1–5 with a one-line why. Organization carries a separate confidence of low, medium, or high because aid quality and RD culture are easy to over-claim.
- Distance & format. How much does the advertised distance and format actually ask?
- Vertical. How serious is the climbing, not just the mile marker?
- Technicality. Hands, poles, route-finding, or just a long dirt road?
- Climate. Heat, monsoon, ice, or a friendly summer afternoon?
- Altitude. Does the air change the race, or is it a talking point?
- Logistics. How hard is the weekend around the race: travel, crew, lodging, rules?
- Prestige & field. Does the start list and history change what the weekend feels like?
- Organization. From public evidence, does the event look competently run?
- Value. Entry fee, travel tax, and lottery friction versus what you get on course.
- Adventure & scenery. Would you fly for the place even if nobody kept score?
Tiers
- Icon. a name that still means something after the expo lights go off. In this catalog: Western States, Hardrock, UTMB Mont-Blanc, Diagonale des Fous, and Tor des Géants. That list is short on purpose.
- Destination. worth the flight if the mountains match what you want.
- Regional. strong weekend if you already live nearby, not a default plane ticket. Vermont, Massanutten, Hellgate, Cruel Jewel, Georgia Death Race, and Lake Sonoma sit here.
- On the board. famous names people still search. Leadville and JFK 50 sit here. We score them like anything else. Worth 2 is the take. We do not stamp Skip on the card.
Independence
Race directors and series owners cannot buy a RaceWorth™ score, a placement, or a rewrite. Complimentary entries, affiliate registration links, and “partner” badges are out of bounds. Outbound links to official and register pages exist so you can leave this site, not so we get paid when you do.
If a race is owned by a circuit, we say so. That is context, not a veto. UTMB the mountain loop and UTMB the World Series are not the same sentence.
Sources
Scores are independent editorial from public information: course pages, official stats, registration rules, and reporting we can cite. Organization confidence is tagged because aid, marking, and RD culture are easy to over-claim.
Facts such as distance and vert follow what the organizer publishes for the edition we dated. Courses move. If a number is wrong, the file in content/races/ is the fix. and we log the change on Corrections.
Out of scope
Road ultras, even historic ones, unless we include them so the scores are visible. Charity 50Ks. HYROX and hybrid fitness races. Track. Stage races that are tours more than mountain ultras. Anything whose primary product is a finisher photo in a city.
We also do not scrape calendars, host user reviews, or run a promoter portal. We do not rank athletes. UltraSignup percentages and the UTMB Index are someone else's product.
Legal
Independent editorial from public information. Not affiliated with the races we score. Scores are not for sale. If you need a doctor, a mountain guide, or an official rulebook, go there. not here.
