We score The Rut 50K, not the festival and not the VK. The published 50K is about 31 miles and 10,500 feet of gain at Big Sky, with Lone Peak as the problem rather than the postcard. Demand is 4 because that vert in that distance, on that surface, is a mountain race: scrambling, exposure, loose rock, a summit that can be a different season from the village. It is not 5 because it is still a day, at a resort, with a capped field and a Sunday start, not a 48-hour wilderness siege. Skyrunning is allowed to be a destination without pretending it is Hardrock.
Worth is 4. Montana skyrunning on Lone Peak is a reason to fly if you wanted this sport. Big Sky will try to make it a mountain-running celebration, which it is, and also a lodging invoice. That is in the value dim, not a skip. Destination, not regional: people do fly for this 50K, and the granite justifies it in a way a canal 50 does not. Speedgoat is the other American skyrunning 50K in the catalog, with more circuit overlay. The Rut is the scrambling answer. Organization confidence is medium. runtherut.com is specific about distances and the sold-out 2026 weekend.
The 2026 date is 13 September, the Sunday of the weekend. If you wanted a Montana 100, this is the wrong distance. If you wanted a 50K that is actually a mountain, this is one of the American answers. If you wanted Western States from a ski valley, look at Olympic Valley and then decide whether you wanted canyons or this.
