San Juan Solstice 50

San Juan Solstice is the 50 miler that makes other 50 milers look like a different sport. It runs out of Lake City, a town that is already in the mountains, onto the Continental Divide, through Alpine Gulch, in the window around the summer solstice because the snow and the creeks do not care about your calendar. Demand is 4: fifty miles, on the order of 12,700 feet of gain, high points around 13,300 feet, lightning as a known Divide problem, snowfields in the years the race comes in early. It is not a 5 only because it is still a 50, not a 100, and because the cutoff culture is a hard day rather than a 48-hour siege.

Worth is 5 because this is the San Juans without pretending Leadville is the San Juans. You fly to a small town, you run on the Divide, you come down. The race exists as a benefit for Lake City EMTs.
