Worth the flight if the mountains match what you want.
The card
The 2026 edition was cancelled because of the Gold Mountain Fire. We still score the race: cancellation is a year, not a verdict on the course.
Ouray is what people think they are signing up for when they say Leadville, and what they should have been pointed toward if they actually wanted the San Juans. The 100 starts and finishes at Fellin Park, a few yards from the hot springs, and then does something almost rude with vertical: on the order of 42,000 feet of gain over about 100 miles, fourteen significant climbs, a last 5,000-foot pull to the Bridge of Heaven, 52 hours on the clock. Demand is 5 without a debate. This is one of the hardest 100-mile asks in North America that you can still enter without a multi-year lottery religion.
Worth is 5 because the weekend matches the flight. Ouray is a box canyon town with real mountains on every wall. The course uses mining roads and trails that exist because people once hauled metal out of this range, not because a brand needed a skyline for a poster. You will be slow. You should be slow. The cutoff admits that. Value is 5: the fee is ordinary, the lottery is not the product, and the scenery does not require a corporate overlay to justify the travel.
Prestige is a 3, and we mean that as a compliment. You will not get a World Series final or a live-coverage industrial complex. You will get a small field, a volunteer requirement (or an opt-out fee), and prize money that comes with drug testing. Organization confidence is medium: the public course description is specific, the event has a track record.
If you want a first 100, do not make it this one. If you want to know whether Colorado still has a mountain 100 that is about mountains, it does. It is not Leadville. It might not even be Hardrock if what you want is vert rather than myth. Ouray is the nasty neighbor Hardrock runners already know about. We are here to say it out loud.
Who it is for
Strong mountain runners who want maximum San Juan vertical, a small field, and a buckle that was not purchased with lottery mythology.
Who should skip
Anyone whose 100-mile résumé is road or rolling trail. Ouray will not care that you finished Leadville.

Dimensions
Ten 1–5 scores with a one-line why. Organization has a separate confidence tag.
Supporting dimensions · organization confidence medium
A 100 with a 52-hour cutoff because 42,000 ft of gain does not fit in a 30-hour story.
Published ~41,862 ft of climb. Fourteen major climbs, last one ~5,000 ft to Bridge of Heaven.
San Juan mining trails, passes, and real steepness. This is not a runnable 100.
July in Ouray: heat in the box canyon, storms on the high points, cold at night.
High points around 13,000 ft. Serious, a step under Hardrock's average elevation.
Small town, volunteer or pay the opt-out, crews work. Not a Chamonix production.
Respected by people who like suffering. Not a global TV final. That is a feature.
Tight, no-frills, publicly detailed course and testing rules. Medium-high from the public record.
A world-class mountain ask without a lottery industrial complex or a World Series fee stack.
The Switzerland of America is a cliché until you are on Imogene and it is not.
