JFK 50 is in this catalog so we can say the quiet part in public: a famous ultra is not automatically a mountain ultra, and this board is not a museum of American firsts. The race is the oldest 50 miler in the country. It starts on the Appalachian Trail, drops onto the C&O Canal towpath, and finishes in Williamsport. That second sentence is the course. Demand is 2 because 50 miles in November is still 50 miles, the AT opening is rocky, and the towpath becomes a pain-management problem. It is not 4 or 5 because nothing about the day is a mountain destination.
Worth is 2 for the same reason. If you live in the Mid-Atlantic, JFK can be a fine annual. The fee is low, the organization is a known quantity, and the history is genuine. If you are here to decide whether to spend a flight and a weekend, the answer is no. The scenery is a canal. The altitude is Appalachian. The format is a road-adjacent long run after a trail prologue. We keep it on the board as an honest boundary case, the race the road-filter exists to reject as a fly-for-this mountain weekend.
We are not sneering at people who love JFK. Love is allowed. We are refusing to launder a towpath 50 into a mountain score because it is old and sold out. The event has been documenting itself for decades; that is competence, not a destination argument.
