Scorecard · is it worth it?

Worth the flight if the mountains match what you want.

The card

Javelina is in this catalog because people treat it like a destination 100, and we need a score that says what kind. It is a ~20-mile rolling loop on the Pemberton Trail in McDowell Mountain Regional Park, costumes, Golden Ticket, 30 hours, Halloween weekend. Demand is 3: 100 miles in desert heat-to-cold is a real night, and it is still a runnable loop. Vertical is a 2. Technicality is a 2. This is not HURT. This is not Hardrock. The demand is climate and distance, not terrain. A Golden Ticket does not turn a party loop into a mountain 100, and we are not going to score it as if it did.

Worth is 3, destination. People fly to Phoenix for this, which is why it is not regional. They fly for the party, the ticket, the scene, not for a mountain. That is allowed. It is also why worth is not 4 or 5. If your flight is for saguaro and a costume, the weekend can work. If your flight is for a mountain 100, you bought the wrong card. Destination here means the airport is part of the product. It does not mean ridges. Organization confidence is high: Aravaipa publishes like a large professional event. The next edition is October 31, 2026. Entry fee is the posted Aravaipa band ($525 starting January 1). Black Canyon is the other Arizona 100K in this batch, more of a point-to-point desert run, also 3/3. Neither is a skip. Neither is a mountain. If you wanted the Southwest as ridges, The Rut is Montana and Wasatch is Utah. Javelina is the desert loop that knows it is a party. We scored it that way.

Who it is for

Runners who want a first or fast 100 in a social desert loop, a Golden Ticket shot, or a Halloween weekend they will actually remember.

Who should skip

Anyone who thought a 100 in Arizona automatically meant mountains. If you wanted ridges, look at The Rut or Wasatch.

Distance & format
How much does the advertised distance and format actually ask?
4 out of 5

A 100-mile loop party with a 30-hour cutoff and a Golden Ticket. The format is social, not alpine.

Vertical
How serious is the climbing, not just the mile marker?
2 out of 5

Rolling desert. The vert is not the story.

Technicality
Hands, poles, route-finding, or just a long dirt road?
2 out of 5

Pemberton Trail singletrack, mostly runnable. Not a mountain 100.

Climate
Heat, monsoon, ice, or a friendly summer afternoon?
4 out of 5

Late October in the McDowells: heat by day, cold by night. Climate is the demand.

Altitude
Does the air change the race, or is it a talking point?
1 out of 5

Sonoran desert hills, not a 14er.

Logistics
How hard is the weekend around the race: travel, crew, lodging, rules?
2 out of 5

Fountain Hills / Phoenix airport. Easy. That is why people fly for a party 100.

Prestige & field
Does the start list and history change what the weekend feels like?
4 out of 5

Golden Ticket, costumes, a deep field. Prestige of a scene, not a mountain.

Organization
From public evidence, does the event look competently run?
4 out of 5

Aravaipa machine, publicly documented, large. Competent.

Value
Entry fee, travel tax, and lottery friction versus what you get on course.
3 out of 5

A destination for the scene. Not a destination for the mountains. Worth 3 is that split.

Adventure & scenery
Would you fly for the place even if nobody kept score?
3 out of 5

Saguaro and a costume 100. Desert pretty. Not a reason if you wanted ridges.
